My view to this picture is that people are attempting to one of the low elements which is known as “spider-web”. Participants are gathered around a campsite as the tent is shown on the background. They are having their outdoor activities beside the tent. The boy in the foreground might be feeling too anxious as he is passing through the “spider-web”. He might also be panicking as if no one was assisting him. The girls at the background are cheering and encouraging the guys to complete the game and not to give up easily. They did not help the boy in the foreground who is trying to pass through the ‘spider-web” as they probably may not have sufficient strength to carry the boy. The outdoor activity emphasises on the values of team-building. It helps to build up the bond between friends and teammates. This is the kind of game which is suitable for the participants to learn how to be co-operative. When a person in the team needs help, the team should come together and help him. If there is any argument in between the games, the team should come out with solutions to settle the problem quickly. What we cannot do alone, maybe done in a team.

Hit-and-run incident

Hit-and-run accident
Reported by: Jerard Lim
12th August 2009

There was a traffic accident recently. One Toyota Corolla car and two motorcycles were involved in the hit-and-run accident. This tragic accident happened along the Central Expressway (CTE) on 21st July 2009 during peak hours at about 5.30p.m.

There were two young adults being injured in the accident. A 33-year-old salesman, Mr Alan Teo said," The two young victims were only at their early 20s!" The victims were a GCE 'A' level certified student, 21-year-old, Mr John Tan and a part time sales girl, 22-year-old, Ms Susan Lim. The two motorcyclists were knocked down by the car and both suffered severe injuries. Mr John Tan was lying on the road unconsciously and Ms Susan Lim was flung out of the motorbike. Two ambulances arrived promptly and the paramedics assisted the two seriously injured victims. The paramedics carried them back into the ambulance. They were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital immediately.

A few eyewitnesses were interviewed. A 45-year-old taxi driver, Mr Billy Heng said, “The driver of the Toyota Corolla did not have sufficient time to step on his brake." He saw how the accident got started. A 49-year-old manager, Mr Sam Toh, was interviewed and said, "All I heard was a loud bang." He was unsure about the cause of the accident. Another eyewitness was a 36-year-old shop owner, Mrs Sally Soh and she said,” I saw one car following very closely behind one motorcycle." She saw what was happening before the accident occurred. The last eyewitness was a 14-year-old secondary student, Eugene Soh, son of Mrs Sally Soh. He said, “It’s so terrifying to encounter such accident to happen!"

When the 45-year-old, Inspector Mark Ong was interviewed, he said, “There was a large capacity of blood flowing along the scene of the accident." He advised drivers to take precautions by driving carefully and not to talk on the phone. Another advice was to avoid speeding your vehicle on the road during peak hours. The police officers are having a lot of difficulties investigating and solving the case. Bystanders are urged to come forward with information on the license plate number of the vehicles involved in the hit-and-run accident.

Summary

They meet daily and help each other. Both live alone and are not very rich. Maria’s parents were anti-Nazi underground activists who provide shelter for Janina and her mother. Janina’s mother died of tuberculosis. Janina clung desperately to her new family and was baptized to the family to avoid being detected and killed by the Nazis. Janina gave up the chance to live with an uncle. During the war, the girls had to fend for themselves because Maria's father was sick and her mother was demonstrating against the Nazis. Her only sibling survived the war but later committed suicide. Janina was separated from her husband and Maria is a widow. Janina contacted the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem to recognise Maria and her parents for saving her during WWII. The cash reward can improve Maria’s financial situation.

A time when I felt unloved

The time when i felt unloved is when I got my PSLE result. My parents were not satisfied with my T-score as I cannot get into a good school. My parents target for my PSLE T-score was 220 but my score did not reach the target. From that day, I seldom talk to my parents and my parents also seldom talk to me. After about one or two weeks, I have did some reflections and I went to my parents and told them that I will do well in secondary school. Eventually, I had done well in secondary one and I told my parents that after sitting for an important exam and it fails, it is not the end of your life.

Caught in the storm recount

When I was the age of 5, I was so afraid when there is lightning. Whenever the lightning occurs, will covered my ears with my hands and shout for my parents. I will feel so afarid till my face turn pale white and cannot even speak out a word. If there is lightning at night, I cannot sleep as I felt very irritated by the thunderous sound of lightning. From then on, I have been used to the sound of lightning and not to be afraid of that anymore.

Proposal for development of Pulau Ubin

Dear Mr Tan

Proposal for development of Pulau Ubin

I, President of the Green Plan 2012 Club, is sending a proposal to you regarding the development of Pulau Ubin. I have interviewed a number of residents and collated their views.

Here are some of the residents' views. Mr Mohamad Ismail Bin Adam, aged 74, Headman of the island, wish to have a new clinic and a school for the locals to study there. He also faces problems such as his grandchildren have to take a bumboat to school for education and to the clinic if they are not feeling well. He thinks that this causes lots of inconvenience for his grandchildren.

Madam Chan Ah Mui, aged 45, former owner of a kiosk for bicycle rental, requests for a good bus service, roads and infrastructure which can improve the accessibility of the places around here and also cycling tracks and nature trails for people to travel easily. Mr Chandran Mohan, aged 20, a polytechnic student, considers transforming Pulau Ubin into a 21st century New Town. This is where he can enjoy the best of both worlds such as shopping facilities and nature at their doorstep to have a relaxed way of life.

Mrs Tan Li Lin, aged 32, housewife and part time hawker assistant, wants to have a reliable water supply where she can hope to start a coffee stall. Good water supply is very important as there are a lot of campers and day trippers going there. Melvin Koh, aged 16, an 'O' level student, thinks that this may destroy the natural beauty of the island and preserve Chek Jawa, the pride of Pulau Ubin, as a nature reserve.

I hope that you will consider on these requests and change Pulau Ubin into a much more comfortable place for the residents to enjoy their lifestyle. I also hope that you can reply me soon.

Yours sincerely,
Jerard Lim

Tsunami in Thailand

On 26 December 2004, the tsunami (tiger waves) measured about 8.0m magnitude was the worst natural disaster to ever strike Thailand, causing loss of many lives as well as major damage to property, the environment and the economy. The severe impact on the natural environment in turn had serious consequences on the fishing and tourism industries and, therefore, thousands of families' livelihoods.

There were a total of 4,812 death cases, 8,457 injured cases and 4,499 missing cases. Elephants were used to move and lift heavy wreckage to search for victims and to clear roads. On a beach in Thailand, a man was leading an elephant to entertain tourists, when the tsunami came. He put several children on the elephant's back and so he saved them from the flood.

This scene had been broadcasting on television for a couple of days. The people who had lost their lives seems pathetic to me as I am living in a place which is free from natural dissters.
